How To Set Ceramic Tableware

Whether you're gearing up for the holidays or want to add a touch of class to your everyday dining routine, knowing how to properly set a table can set a tone for each and every gathering.

What used to be common knowledge can now be a way to impress your guests! In this post, we're working from the top piece down to create the perfect dinnerware set stack for any occasion.

Salad Plate

If salad is included with your dinner plans, it is typically the first dish eaten. For this reason, set the salad plate on top of your main plates. If you want to feel fancy for special occasions by adding a fork just for salad, place that salad fork to the left of the dinner fork. Place the knife to the right of the dinner plate and then set the spoon to the right of the knife.

This kind of place setting is considered casual enough for everyday use, with just enough plates for a salad and main course. If you wish for the salad to be eaten at the same time as the main course, you might consider placing the salad dish as a side plate as opposed to on top of your dinner plates.

Dinner Plates

Your dinner plate is the center piece for your setting. Whether you're looking for a handmade look with hand thrown pieces, or the pristine look of polished white plates, there are many affordable options to consider, even for a more luxurious seven piece set.

Place the dinner plate in the center of the table setting. The fork is placed to the left of the plate. Place the knife to the right of the dinner plate and then set the spoon to the right of the knife. Set the water glass in the top right corner, above the knife.

Keep in mind that if you are also serving a salad or starter separately, the dinner plate will be placed under the salad plate.

Why Choose Ceramic Plates?

Did you know that archeologists have uncovered human-made ceramics that date back to at least 24,000 BC? There's a reason why ceramic remains classic. The porous clay underneath the glaze helps ceramic retain heat, making a thick ceramic plate a perfect place for warm food.

While being durable enough to withstand high temperatures, ceramic dinnerware is a fraction of the weight of other oven safe materials, such as cast-iron, and remains a kitchen favorite due to its beauty and versatility.
