FAQs

At HF Coors, we pride ourselves in providing high quality products and services to our customers. Here are the answers to many of your frequently asked questions. If you have any further questions please contact us by phone at 520-903-1010, or by e-mail at info@hfcoors.com. We’d love to hear from you!

Is HF Coors dinnerware lead-free and cadmium-free?

Yes! All of HF Coors ceramic pieces are lead-free. We do not put lead in any of our clay or glazes, nor do they contain any Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA), or FD&C Red No. 3. Our ceramic pieces pass CA Prop 65 as well as FDA standards.

Most colors, including white, are cadmium-free.

The glaze colors orange and red cannot be made without cadmium. But the safety of our dinnerware is of utmost importance to us. Therefore, HF Coors only uses what is called “encapsulated cadmium”. The cadmium is encapsulated in non-toxic Zircon crystals rendering it impossible to leach out of the crystals, even during firing at more than 2000 degrees Fahrenheit in our kiln!

Each year, HF Coors, and many of our commercial clients, have our ware tested for lead and cadmium by independent laboratories across the country. Our CEO even tested red and orange glazed dinnerware that had been used daily by his family of four for 5 years. All lab tests, whether of freshly made dinnerware or of pieces used for many years, have always shown “none detected” for lead and cadmium, and they meet or surpass CA Prop 65 and FDA standards.

Can I use HF Coors dinnerware for my own custom art and designs?

Can I use HF Coors dinnerware for my own custom art and designs?

We’re often approached by artists who would like to use our dinnerware as a canvas for their creativity. While we don’t have the ability to fire outside artwork in our kilns or allow painting in our factory, we’re happy to provide blank pieces for artists to decorate and fire in their own studios.

For larger, consistent designs—such as those needed for restaurants or retail—we use domestically sourced decals that are in-glaze fired directly into the dinnerware, creating a permanent and durable finish. This is the same process we use for our own detailed patterns, like our Mimbreno line.

Because custom decals require specialized production, costs can be high in low volumes. For example, a multi-colored decal can run $5–$10 per piece (plus labor and firing), with a minimum order of about 150–200 pieces. In practice, this means a single 10” plate with a custom multi-colored decal could cost $50+ per piece in small quantities.

If you’re interested in exploring custom work at scale, our team would be glad to walk you through the process.

Do you donate any proceeds from Mimbreno dinnerware sales to Native Americans or causes that support Native Americans?

The Mimbreno pattern has a remarkable history. Originally designed in the 1930s by Mary Jane Colter for the ATSF Railway’s dining cars, it drew inspiration from ancient Mimbres pottery and became an iconic design on the Super Chief line until 1971. HF Coors began producing the Mimbreno pattern in 2015 under license from BNSF Railway, carrying forward a beloved piece of American railroad history.

Because the original Mimbres culture has not existed since around 1150, there is no direct tribal group to whom royalties can be given. The artwork itself was created by Mary Jane Colter, not by a Native artist or community, which makes direct proceeds difficult to allocate in a way that honors current Native tribes.

That said, HF Coors is committed to giving back in meaningful ways. Each year, we support Native American cultural preservation through the Fred Harvey History Weekend in Santa Fe, NM. This event raises funds for the New Mexico History Museum, which does extensive work to preserve Native American history and culture across the Southwest. Our contributions include both financial donations and the gifting of unique HF Coors pieces for fundraising auctions. Over the years, these efforts have raised tens of thousands of dollars to benefit the Museum and its programs.

In this way, the legacy of the Mimbreno design continues to not only honor history but also actively support the preservation of Native American culture in the region where it began.
